Your lunch will be served on board the Klotok boat. After about 2 hours you will reach the Rimba Eco Lodge.

Enjoy your free afternoon in your eco lodge in the jungle.

With a bit of luck you can watch passing Irrawady dolphins in the river in front of the lodge.

After breakfast at your jungle lodge, you will be awaited on the Klotok boat to drive you towards Pondok Tangguy for the opportunity to take unique photos at the orangutan feeding time.

Afterward, hike through the rainforest in the company of a ranger in search of wildlife.

After lunch aboard your Klotok boat, continue to Nata Lengkuas, the upcoming new feeding station in Tanjung Putting National Park.

This site is not yet officially open, so you are very lucky to be one of the first visitors in the world to visit this new protected area.

Accommodation: Rimba Eco Lodge, Emerald, incl. full board

Today you will drive to the reforestation site in Jerumbun.

There you will learn everything about the conservation efforts and preservation of the rainforest and learn a lot about the medicinal properties of the various plants of the rainforest.

Afterward, continue to Camp Leaky, a reserve for older orangutans that are released into their natural habitat.

At Camp Leakey, accompanied by your experienced guide and park ranger, you will have the opportunity to make your way through the jungle in search of wild orangutans, gibbons, proboscis monkeys and macaques.

You’ll also discover an incredible variety of colorful birds, reptiles, and insects.

In the dense jungle, you also have the chance to discover the rare flower of the world’s largest plant – the giant rafflesia (Rafflesia arnoldii). Your lunch will be served on board.

Afterwards you will visit the feeding station, where the rehabilitated orangutans are additionally fed before they can feed independently in the jungle.

Accommodation: Rimba Eco Lodge, Emerald, incl. full board

Today you will first drive to the village of Tanjung Harapan Village, where you will visit a local school and the village (on your wish), and immerse yourself in the everyday life of the local population to learn more about the culture, life and survival in the jungle of the indigenous people.

Your next stop is the Orangutan Rehabilitation Center in Tanjung Harapan. After lunch, you will experience the orangutan feeding time at 15.00.

Later in the quiet afternoon, as the Klotok slowly moves upstream, you can spot proboscis monkeys and orangutans along the riverbank, and often crocodiles, from the deck. The captain then chooses a place to moor for the night.

Today you will spend the night on the boat, surrounded by Nipah palm trees and enjoy the unique soundscape of the jungle at night.

The area is famous for its evening light spectacle. With a little luck, millions of fireflies will light up the night for you today.

Accommodation: Klotok boat, on deck, without cabin (with mattress, blankets, pillows & mosquito net), incl. full board

Awakened by the sounds of the jungle and a relaxing breakfast on deck, you’ll travel to Tanjung Harapan Camp on your private Klotok boat and set off with your park ranger in search of wildlife in the dense jungle.

Lunch will then be served on board your Klotok boat. Then, cruise slowly along the river to observe the wildlife along the river.

You will have dinner on board before embarking on a jungle tour with your guide to observe nocturnal animals such as goat lemurs and giant tarantulas on their natural hunt for prey under the cover of night.

Accommodation: Rimba Eco Lodge, Emerald, incl. full board

Upon arrival at Balikpapan airport, your private guide and driver will meet you. The drive to Samboja Lodge takes 1 – 1 1/2 hours over 45 km, partly adventurous road conditions.

Her lodge works in a joint project with the Borneo-Orangutan Survival Foundation (BOS).

Here you can find out first-hand what measures are being taken to protect and save the rainforests, how the jungle is being reforested and how the endangered orangutan populations are being protected.

The Samboja Lodge is made exclusively of natural and recycled environmental materials and is uniquely furnished with traditional, local woodcarving art from the Dayak village communities.

Enjoy a fantastic view of the tropical rainforest from your balcony. An observation tower also gives you a unique panoramic view high up above the treetops of the jungle.

In the afternoon, your guide will pick you up and accompany you on foot to the feeding of the orangutans on your own island.

The island orangutans can no longer be released into the wild for various reasons. Therefore, they can only be viewed from land. However, no contact is allowed for visitors with any of the orangutans.

The islands are within easy walking distance of the lodge. The guide of Samboja Lodge will help you visit the island.

Afterwards you will visit the Sun Bear Sanctuary. Samboja Lestari is home to one of the largest sun bear projects in the world.

They can help prepare and feed food.

Accommodation: Samboja Lodge, Standard, Kutai Kartanegara Samboja, incl. breakfast

Less than an hour’s drive from Samboja Lestari is the protected forest area of Sungai Wain.

This was the first BOS Foundation publishing site, where 75 rehabilitated orangutans were released between 1992 and 1998.

During previous visits, several female orangutans with babies were observed. Since they are completely wild again, there is no one hundred percent guarantee that you will see one of these released orangutans on this trip.

But on this rather challenging trip, you will see a lot of interesting wildlife.

Sungai Hitam (Black River) 2-3 Hours Tour: Sungai Hitam is best visited in the early morning and late afternoon.

After a 30-minute drive from Samboja Lestari, take a boat ride along the Sungai Hitam tidal river to see critically endangered Proboscis monkeys and other wildlife. Local fishermen will guide you on this tidal river. The fisherman will receive a daily income for their services. In the evening we return to the Samboja Lodge.

Accommodation: Samboja Lodge, Standard, Kutai Kartanegara Samboja, incl. breakfast

After your breakfast and check-out, your guide will be waiting for you to drive you to Bukit Bangkirai, or Bangkirai Hill, in about an hour.

The protected area is located about 58 km from Balikpapan and 150 km from Samarinda and serves to protect and preserve the endemic tree and plant species, i.e. only found in Borneo.

In the 1,500-hectare area, you will find the tree species Bangkirai (Shorea leavis), Keruing (Dipterocarpus Comutus), Jelutung (Dyera Constulata), Kempas (Koompassia malaccensis) and Rattan (Calamus sp.).

The dominant Bangkirai trees reach a height of 40 – 50 meters, with a diameter of 2.3 meters and an average lifespan of 150 years.

The Canopy Bridges, made of 64 m steel, hang from 5 large Bangkirai trees at a height of 30 meters and offer visitors unique views of the rainforest.

During your hiking tour on the ground and high above the treetops, you will not only discover the endemic giants, but of course also their active inhabitants, such as hornbills, gibbons, Asian paradise flycatchers, maroon langurs, and many other unique animals that only occur in Borneo.

After your tour, continue to your hotel in Samarinda.

Accommodation: Swiss Belhotel, Deluxe, Samarinda, incl. breakfast

After breakfast, check out and drive to the village of Pampang, about 20 km from Samarinda City.

The Dayak Kenyah tribe inhabits this area after they moved here in 1967 from their original home of Apokayan, in the Malinau district, East Kalimantan.

The proximity to the modern city gives them better access to education and everyday goods. Today, about 800 members of the Dayak community live in Pampang Village.

The uniqueness and beauty of the traditional longhouses, as well as the colorful handicrafts are a visitor magnet for every tourist.

After you have explored the culture and customs of everyday life in the village, you will have a slightly longer drive (approx. 3 – 4 hours), over 173 km to Sangatta.

Accommodation: Royal Victoria Sangatta, Deluxe, incl. breakfast

After an early breakfast, you will depart for the harbor and take a motorized long canoe upstream across the Sangatta River into the jungle of Kutai National Park. North of the Mahakam near the Kutai NP is home to some very beautiful lakes, such as the Danau Maau, Santan, Besar and Sirapan, surrounded by traditional Bugi villages.

The 2,000 square kilometer area, formerly part of the Kutai Game Reserve, has been under strict protection since 1970. Unfortunately, only 30% of the primary rainforests survived the Great Borneo Fire of 1982/83.

There are two entrances for tourists: Sangkima, on the way between Sangatta and Bontang, unfortunately offers little chance of wildlife sightings. The other entrance, Prevab, is about 30 minutes by boat across the Sangatta River from Kabo Pier and impresses with its natural biodiversity.

Of course, we will take you through this entrance.

Once you arrive in Prevab, the local rangers will be waiting for you and will guide you through the jungle in search of wild orangutans, exotic birds, gibbons and other endemic animal and plant species.

The Kutai NP is dominated by tropical lowland rainforest and is home to 958 different plant species, including 8 of the world’s 9 species of the Dipterocarpaceae, 41 orchid species and 220 different species of medicinal plants, 10 different primates, 90 different species of mammals and 300 different bird species inhabit the park. Orangutans, Malay bears, sambar deer, Sunda oxen, maroon lemurs, proboscis monkeys, clouded leopards, flying squirrels, sea otters and many other animal species can be discovered.

After the orangutan population declined from 600 in 2004 to 60 in 2009, 2,000 orangutans were happily identified in 2010.

Your lunch will be waiting for you at the park ranger station. In the afternoon, you will go on another jungle safari to discover more wildlife, such as proboscis monkeys and crocodiles.

Today you will spend the night in the middle of the jungle at the Prefab Research Station.

Accommodation: Prefab Research Station (basic accommodation), Kutai National Park, incl. full board

After breakfast and check-out, you will go by car to the Dayak village of Miau Baru. The drive to the north of East Kutai Regency takes about 4 hours for 200 km.

This area is mostly inhabited by the Dayak Kayan (Uma’Lekan) and some other Bugi tribes (originally from South Sulawesi and Java).

The former village name Long Kejik Village was changed to Miau Baru Village in 1997 after the village communities were relocated here from the inaccessible jungle areas by the state migration program.

The villagers have preserved their culture and customs. You will stay in the village in a homestay and experience and live the traditional everyday life of the village community.

Get up close and personal with the locals and learn how to live and survive with and from the jungle.

Accommodation: Homestay, Miau Baru Dayak Village, Kutai National Park, incl. full board

Experience the morning in the circle of the village community before you set off on a 4 – 5 hour journey over rough roads, along palm oil plantations and wild nature, towards Merabu Village.

In 2013, the Dayak Lebo community with just 235 inhabitants achieved that they were given management of 8,425 hectares of rainforest.

In times of catastrophically growing palm oil plantations and destruction of primary rainforests, and thus also the home for orangutans and other animals, this is a very significant achievement and role model for sustainable nature conservation throughout Indonesia.

In Merabu Village you will find a rich ecosystem of rivers, limestone caves and primary rainforests, which is home to an incredible biodiversity of flora and fauna.

Upon arrival, discuss your program for the next day with your guide and the villagers.

Accommodation: Homestay, Merabu Village, incl. full board

After breakfast, you will set off together with your guide and a team from the village to one of the world’s largest and most untouched karst forests to the caves of Beloyot.

Discover 4,000-year-old cave paintings and unknown fossils and man-made sculptures.

Your 2 – 3-hour hiking tour will take you along mysterious lakes, huge trees, small streams and bridges. (The imposing trees can be adopted for the benefit of conservation and the village community).

After arriving at the camp, you will rest a bit before hiking and scrambling to the Bloyot Cave in about 30 minutes. The somewhat impassable ascent is definitely worth it.

Explore the cave and discover cave spiders, swallows’ nests, bats and other cave paintings, such as animal drawings and handprints. After your cave tour, lunch awaits you at the cave camp.

After that, you will hike in about 30 min. through the jungle and over small wooden bridges to Lungun, the place where the local Dayak guide Coffin is kept in a cave, similar to Toraja in South Sulawesi.

The trekking tour afterwards towards Merabu Village takes about 2 – 3 hours.

After resting, the tour continues to Nyadeng Lake. This time you will take the motorized long canoe as transport, which offers space for 3 – 4 people plus the boatswain and the team.

Enjoy your approximately 390-minute ride and observe waterfowl, monitor lizards, monkeys, and the magnificent views of the pristine jungle.

Once you arrive in Nyadeng, you will reach Nyadeng Lake after about 30 minutes on foot, along cocoa plantations.

Afterwards, it’s time for you to relax and enjoy nature while the team sets up your tent and prepares dinner.

Accommodation: Tent, Merabu, Nyadeng Lake, incl. full board

Today we get up early and after a light breakfast we go up to the Ketepu summit. The trekking tour lasts about 1 hour until you can enjoy the spectacular view over the cloud-covered Kast forests.

Accompanied by the sounds of gibbons, hornbills and other animal species, you will experience why this place is called “The Hidden Paradise”. After the tour, head back to Merabu Village.

Accommodation: Homestay, Merabu Village, incl. full board

After breakfast and check-out, your adventure will take you to the small tropical paradise of Derawan Island.

The drive to Berau to the port takes about 4-5 hours.

Accommodation: Sangalaki Dive Resort, Room A, including full board

Enjoy your free time in paradise, far away from mass tourism.

The small island of Sangalaki off the west coast of the Indonesian part of Borneo, Kalimantan, is one of the absolute diving highlights – worldwide.

It is one of the best places in the world, if not the best ever, to dive with manta rays. It is also the main breeding ground for green sea turtles in Southeast Asia and offers regular encounters with whale sharks at a relatively short distance from the island.

Sangalaki also boasts a completely intact coral landscape with hundreds of soft and hard coral species, macro life with dozens of nudibranch species, sharks, cuttlefish and reef fish as far as the eye can see.

A diving area in a class of its own, remote, untouched and under nature conservation.

The diving lodge Sangalaki Manta Paradise is located exactly on this completely natural island and offers dives to all these extraordinary spots off the coast of Kalimantan.

Located directly on the snow-white sandy beach, the lodge consists of two main buildings – the restaurant with integrated bar and the diving center – and 14 huts.

Environmental protection and sustainability are very important at the lodge, which is why all buildings are built on stilts so that the turtles have unhindered access to the beach or to lay eggs.

The restaurant serves breakfast, lunch and dinner in buffet style.

It consists of a dining room with long wooden benches and a terrace overlooking the sea, where the bar also serves cool drinks, tea or coffee.

The food consists mainly of Indonesian and Asian dishes, often complemented by an outdoor Bbq stand. In the same building there is also a small TV room and a souvenir shop.

Accommodation: Sangalaki Dive Resort, Room A, including full board

The flora and fauna of Kalimantan: discoveries in the Samboja Kutai National Park

Kalimantan – Jungle Adventure & Snorkeling Paradise

Introduction to Samboja Kutai National Park

The Samboja Kutai National Park, located in Kalimantan in eastern Indonesia, covers an area of about 10,000 hectares and offers a unique habitat for a variety of plant and animal species. The national park was established in 1996 to protect and preserve the region’s diverse ecosystems. This retreat forms a crucial part of the biodiversity of Kalimantan, an area known for its rich flora and fauna.

The geographical location of Samboja Kutai National Park is strategically important as it is located near the coastal area between the Malay and Indonesian oceans. This position has helped the park have a mix of different habitats, including tropical rainforests, swamp forests, and seasonal shrublands. This variety of landscapes provides an ideal habitat for a variety of animal species, including endangered species such as the orangutans and various hornbill species.

The Samboja Kutai National Park plays an essential role in the conservation of biodiversity in Kalimantan. It is not only a protected area for endangered species, but also an important source of scientific research and education. The park attracts many naturalists and environmentalists who want to explore the unique ecosystems and their importance to the regional climate and environment. By connecting forests, watercourses, and other habitats, the National Park ensures that many living organisms can thrive, while taking action to protect and preserve these precious ecosystems.

Kalimantan – Jungle Adventure & Snorkeling Paradise

The impressive flora of Kalimantan

The Samboja Kutai National Park is an impressive example of the diverse flora of Kalimantan. In this park, different habitats meet, from lush tropical rainforests to unique mangroves. These habitats are home to thousands of plant species, many of which are endemic. Visitor can only find them here in this region. The tropical rainforests offers an extraordinary biodiversity that they are among the most species-rich ecosystems in the world.

One of the most notable plant species in the park is Rafflesia arnoldii, known for its gigantic flowers. In addition to being visually stunning, this flower plays an important role in the ecosystem by attracting insects and contributing to the pollination of plants. Other important plants are various types of palm trees and deciduous trees, which form the dense canopy and provide habitat for numerous animals. The different plant species are closely interwoven and form a complex network that is indispensable for the survival of the animal world.

The mangrove areas on the edge of the coastline are also of great importance. These special plants defy the saline conditions and contribute not only to coastal erosion but also to carbon sequestration, which is crucial for combating climate change. In addition, the mangroves promote the water cycle and thus provide a valuable function within the ecosystem of the national park. The preservation of this plant diversity is therefore of central importance not only for Kalimantan, but also for global ecological processes.

Overall, the flora of Samboja Kutai National Park shows not only the beauty of Kalimantan, but also the complex ecological relationships mediated by the different plant species. This unique flora is an indispensable part of the region’s natural resources and biodiversity.

The fascinating fauna: animal species of the national park

The Samboja Kutai National Park in Kalimantan is  home to a remarkable variety of animal species, including many that require protection due to their endangerment. The orangutan (Pongo pygmaeus), a symbol of the tropical rainforest, is one of the most well-known species in this area. These intelligent primates spend most of their lives in the trees and are known for their highly developed social structures. Orangutans often reproduce every two to four years, with mothers being responsible for raising their offspring for a long time. This advanced care is crucial for the survival of the species in its natural habitat, as the offspring must learn important survival skills.

Another notable animal in the national park is the Bornean forest chimpanzee (Pongo pygmaeus wurung), a subspecies of orangutan that is particularly threatened. These animals are also known for their creative problem-solving skills and adaptability to the changing environments of the rainforest. In contrast to their relatives, Bornean forest chimpanzees have a particularly pronounced role in the ecosystem, as they contribute to the dispersal of seeds through their food intake and thus contribute to the regenerative capacity of the forest.

However, the habitats of these animal species are under increasing pressure. Habitat loss due to deforestation, illegal hunting and poaching is a serious threat. The protection of this fascinating species and its habitats is of utmost importance for the balance of the ecosystem in Samboja Kutai National Park. Measures to protect the animals and their habitats are essential to ensure that future generations have the opportunity to experience these impressive animals in their natural environment.

Conservation measures and sustainable development in the Samboja Kutai National Park

In the Samboja Kutai National Park, various initiatives have been established to ensure the protection of the unique flora and fauna. These conservation measures are crucial to conserve the park’s biological resources while developing them sustainably. One of the central components is the ranger program, which includes trained personnel who oversee the park’s more than 1.5 million hectares. These rangers are responsible for educating visitors, but also for preventing illegal activities such as poaching or illegal timber harvesting.

In addition to ranger programs, community-based projects play an important role in protecting nature in the national park. These projects aim to involve local people in the sustainable use of the resources and to involve them as stakeholders in the conservation measures. Ecotourism initiatives provide economic incentives for local residents to actively participate in the protection of the environment. This approach not only boosts the local economy, but also helps raise community awareness of the importance of conservation.

International organizations are also making a significant contribution to supporting conservation efforts in Samboja Kutai National Park. These organisations provide funding, technical know-how and expertise to implement sustainable development concepts. They work closely with local authorities and communities to promote biodiversity conservation activities while securing resources for future generations.

Visitors to the national park can also contribute to the conservation of nature by participating in guided tours organized by rangers or local guides. By following the park’s guidelines and respecting the natural environment, visitors can ensure that their presence is not harmful. Supporting sustainable practices, such as avoiding single-use plastics and using environmentally friendly products, contributes to a better conservation record in Samboja Kutai National Park.
