After your arrival at Balikpapan airport, your private guide will meet you.

The journey to Samboja Lodge takes 1 – 1 ½ hours over 45 km, sometimes with adventurous road conditions. Your lodge works in a joint project with the Borneo Orangutan Survival Foundation (BOS).
Here you will find out first hand what measures are being taken to protect and save the rainforests, how the jungle is being reforested and the endangered orangutan populations are being protected.

Enjoy a fantastic view of the tropical rainforest from your balcony. An observation tower also gives you a unique panoramic view high above the treetops of the jungle.

In the afternoon, your private guide will pick you up and accompany you on foot to feed the orangutans on your own island.
The island orangutans can no longer be released into the wild for various reasons. Therefore, they can only be viewed from land. However, visitors are not allowed to have contact with any of the orangutans. The islands are easily accessible on foot from the lodge. The Samboja Lodge guide will help you to tour the island.

Afterwards, you will visit the Sun Bear Sanctuary. Samboja Lestari is home to one of the largest sun bear projects in the world. You can help with the preparation and feeding of food.

Less than an hour’s drive from Samboja Lestari is the protected forest area of Sungai Wain. This was the first release site of the BOS Foundation where 75 rehabilitated orangutans were released between 1992 and 1998.During previous visits, several female orangutans with babies were observed. Since they are completely wild again, there is no 100% guarantee that you will see any of these released orangutans on this trip.

But you will see a lot of interesting wildlife on this fairly challenging trip. Sungai Hitam (Black River) 2-3 Hours Tour: Sungai Hitam is best visited in the early morning and late afternoon. After a 30-minute drive from Samboja Lestari, take a boat ride along the Sungai Hitam tidal river to see endangered proboscis monkeys and other wildlife. Local fishermen will guide you on this tidal river.

In the evening we return to the Samboja Lodge.

‘ After breakfast, check out and drive to Kabo Village, where you will take a motorized canoe up the Sangatta River to Kutai National Park.

After your arrival, check in at the Prefab Research Station. The research station offers a unique starting point for day and night tours through the jungle.

After a rest, you will start your first private tour through the jungle in search of wild orangutans and other jungle inhabitants.

North of the Mahakam, Kutai NP is home to some very beautiful lakes, such as Danau Maau, Santan, Besar and Sirapan, surrounded by traditional Bugi villages.
The 2,000 square kilometer area, formerly part of the Kutai Game Reserve, has been under strict protection since 1970.

The Kutai NP is dominated by tropical lowland rainforest and is home to 958 different plant species, including 8 of the world’s 9 species of winged fruit plants (Dipterocarpaceae), 41 orchid species and 220 different types of medicinal plants, 10 different primates, 90 different types of mammals and 300 different bird species inhabit the park. Orangutans, Malayan bears, sambar deer, Sunda oxen, maroon lemurs, proboscis monkeys, clouded leopards, flying squirrels, sea otters and many other animal species can be discovered.

Today, experience the unique biodiversity of flora and fauna of the jungle during your day and night jungle tours.

After the orangutan population declined from 600 in 2004 to 60 in 2009, 2.000 orangutans were happily identified again in 2010.

At nightfall, you will be escorted back into the jungle to discover more wildlife. With a little luck, you will see some other unique creatures in the jungle that you don’t see during the day, such as tarantulas, night birds, exotic insects, colorful frogs, tarsier lemurs, and with even more luck, fluorescent mushrooms.

Early in the morning, you and your guide will head back into the jungle to observe wildlife.

After the tour, time to check out and take the boat to Sangatta and drive to the north of East Kutai Regency (approx. 4 hours for 200 km).

The drive to the north of East Kutai Regency takes approx. 4 hours for 200 km. This area is mostly inhabited by the Dayak Kayan (Uma`Lekan) and some other Bugi tribes (originally from South Sulawesi and Java).

The former village name Long Kejik Village was changed to Miau Baru Village in 1997 after the village communities were relocated here from the inaccessible jungle areas through the state migration program.

The villagers have preserved their culture and customs. You will stay in a homestay in the village and experience and live the traditional everyday life of the village community.

After breakfast and check-out, your adventure takes you to the small tropical paradise of Nabucco Island, far away from mass tourism off the east coast of Kalimantan.
The trip to Berau to the harbor takes about 4-5 hours. From the harbor, take the private ferry to Nabucco Private Island (boat trip about 3 hours).
