This region includes the ancient cities of Sigiriya, Polonnaruwa, and Kandy, all of which offer a glimpse into Sri Lanka’s rich history and architectural heritage.

Sigiriya

Sigiriya impresses with its majestic rock fortress that rises 200 meters above the surrounding landscape. The lion entrance, impressive frescoes and intricately designed water gardens make Sigiriya one of the most outstanding examples of Sri Lankan engineering. This monumental site dates back to the 5th century AD and was once the royal mausoleum, symbolizing the power and influence of the rulers of the time.

Polonnaruwa

The city of Polonnaruwa, on the other hand, represents another exciting chapter in Sri Lanka’s history. As the country’s second capital during the Middle Ages, Polonnaruwa boasts numerous ruins and temples that reflect the glory days of Sri Lankan civilization. Of particular note are the Gal Vihara, a complex of impressive Buddha carvings, as well as the remains of the royal palace complexes and the Vatadage, a round temple of significant cultural and religious significance.

Kandy

Kandy, the last bastion of the Sri Lankan monarchy, is known for the Temple of the Sacred Tooth, which houses the Tooth of Buddha. This place attracts not only believers but also tourists who want to learn more about the deep spiritual value and heritage of Sri Lanka. Kandy is also surrounded by a picturesque tea culture, which makes the region a unique destination.

Overall, Sri Lanka’s cultural triangle offers a fascinating journey through history and impressively shows the diversity and depth of Sri Lankan culture. These historical sites are not only architectural marvels but also witnesses that preserve the achievements and beliefs of Sri Lankan civilization for centuries.
