Before sunset, the best time is to see leopards hunting, crocodiles sunbathing, elephants playing in the water, and many species of birds and reptiles.
Highlights in Minneriya NP are first and foremost a huge ancient reservoir, which was created as a water reservoir for the nearby royal cities as early as the 3rd century, the reservoir is now a paradise for waterfowl and various species of deer.
In addition, the park is home to one of the largest meeting places for Asian elephants on the continent.
But not only elephants pass by the visitors here, but also the endemic white-bearded langurs and Ceylon hat monkeys, Sambar and Ceylonese axis deer, Sri Lankan sloth bears and leopards and the gray slender lorikeet.
The huge water reservoir makes the park one of Sri Lanka’s most important bird areas, with 160 specimens.
